Whether you are a first time storyteller, have been telling stories for years or are just looking for a good story to read, these books are just what you need. For more stories to read, tell and enjoy look in the folk and fairy tale section (398.2) of the Vineland Public Library.

A collection of accounts of mysterious happenings in America, from the Philadelphia Experiment to Bigfoot to the real murderer in the Lizzie Borden case.

• J 133.1 Gho Ghost stories from the American South. 85 Ghost stories from the South with notes about how and where they were collected.

• J 133.1 Gho Ghost stories from the American Southwest. 142 ghost stories from the Southwest with notes about how and where they were collected.

• J 133.1 Rob Civil War ghost stories and legends by Nancy Roberts. Interesting collection of ghost stories with background information about each tale.

• J 372.6 Ham Children tell stories: a teaching guide by Martha Hamilton & Mitch Weiss. A step-by-step guide for teachers, librarians and parents to teach storytelling to children. Includes sample stories and a story bibliography.

• J 372.6 Joi Joining in: an anthology of audience participation stories & how to tell them. A collection of stories that involve audience participation. With notes from the storytellers to the reader about telling each story and background information about the story and storyteller.

• J 372.64 Dav Telling your own stories: for family and classroom storytelling, public speaking, and personal journalizing by Donald Davis. A simple aid to creating your own stories. It includes exercises for developing story lines.

• J 372.64 Lip Storytelling coach: how to listen, praise, and bring out people's best  by Doug Lipman. A handbook for teachers, librarians, parents and anyone who is helping others on the path to becoming a storyteller.

• J 372.64 Mag Creative storytelling: choosing, inventing, and sharing tales for children by Jack Maguire. A handbook for learning, adapting or creating original stories to tell to children.

• J 372.67 Gho Ghost and I: scary stories for participation telling. Three sets of scary stories, each set aimed at a different age level. Some background information is given about the story and the storyteller who contributed the tale.

• J 398.2 Afr African-American folktales for young readers. These stories were selected by storytellers because they are easy to tell and greatly enjoyed by families. The stories make enjoyable reading too.

• J 398.2 DeS The Emerald lizard  by Pleasant De Spain. Fifteen Latin American folktales to tell. The stories come from countries in Central and South America.

• J 398.2 DeS Thirty-three multicultural tales to tell  by Pleasant DeSpain. A collection of folktales from around the world, selected for their "tellability." Some information is included about each tale.

• J 398.2 DeS Twenty-two splendid tales to tell, from around the world by Pleasant DeSpain. A collection of simple multicultural tales to read or tell. Includes some notes about folklore motifs. Two volumes.

• J 398.2 For Wisdom tales from around the world  by Heather Forest. A collection of traditional tales from around the world, reflecting the cumulative wisdom of Sufi, Zen, Taoist, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, African, and Native American cultures.

• J 398.2 For Wonder tales from around the world  by Heather Forest.   Twenty-seven multicultural tales with some background information about how and where they were collected.

• J 398.2 Hea When stones were soft: East African fireside tales  by Eleanor Heady. A sampling of stories told in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. There is a running story at the beginning of each tale that ties the book together.

• J 398.2 Hol Spiders in the hairdo: modern urban legends by David Holt. A collection of retellings of some of the most popular urban legends with a short bibliography.

• J 398.2 Mac Ghost stories from the Pacific Northwest  by Margaret Read Macdonald. A collection of ghost stories from the Northwest with extensive background notes on the hauntings. It even includes a location index.

• J 398.2 Rea Ready-to-tell tales: sure-fire stories from America's favorite storytellers. A multicultural collection of traditional tales contributed by more than forty of America's most experienced storytellers, with tips for telling stories.

• J 398.2 She Trickster tales: forty folk stories from around the world by Josepha Sherman. A collection of multicultural stories about the trickster. Background information is included about each story.

• J 398.2 Sie Multicultural folktales: stories to tell young children   by Judy Sierra & Robert Kaminski. A collection of stories to tell young children and activities to enhance those stories. Includes some background information on the stories and patterns for crafts and flannel board stories.

• J 398.2 Tho One hundred favorite folktales  by Stith Thompson. An interesting collection of folk and fairy tales from around the world. Included are many variations of modern standards like Rumpelstiltskin. Brief notes on the stories are found at the back of the book.

• J 398.21 Cin Cinderella. Versions of Cinderella collected from around the world. Includes background information about the fairy tale and about how and where the tale was collected.

• J 398.21 Kno Knock at the door. A collection of 35 multicultural versions of the tale in which a dangerous character knocks at the door and tries to trick the children into letting him in. Includes background information about the tale and how and where the story was collected.

• J 398.21 She Merlin's kin: world tales of the hero magician  by Josepha Sherman. Thirty tales of magicians found in the folklore of the world. With notes, background information and a bibliography.

• J 398.24 Fol Folktale cat. A collection of cat folklore from around the world with notes about how and where the story was collected.

• J 398.25 Sca   Scary story reader. A collection of folktales and popular urban legends.

• J 649 Bre  Treasured time with five to ten-year-olds  by Jan Brennan. A monthly guide to spur-of-the-moment projects using everyday materials to promote literacy.

• J 649 Bre Treasured time with your toddler  by Jan Brennan. A monthly guide to activities that will promote reading readiness in your toddler, including storytelling.

• J 808.5 Lip Improving your storytelling: beyond the basics for all who tell stories in work or play  by Doug Lipman. This book is a guide for storytellers that will make them more effective tellers and give them a framework on which to build their skills.

• J 808.5 Mel Art of storytelling  by Nancy Mellon. A step-by-step guide for individuals interested in storytelling following the author's methods. Includes a story bibliography.

• J 808.5 Moo Storyteller's guide: storytellers share advice for the classroom, boardroom, showroom, podium, pulpit and center stage  by William Mooney. A handbook for the beginning storyteller with lots of advice from established storytellers. Includes chapters on censorship, copyright, resources and a bibliography.

• J 808.543 Ros Storyteller, an exploration of storytelling  by Ramon Royal Ross. This book is filled with the how-tos and why-tos of various methods of storytelling. It gives background information on tales and activities to use while telling.

• J 813 Eas Eastern ghosts: haunting, spine-chilling stories from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Fiction ghost stories set in the Mid-Atlantic States. Background on the authors is included.

• J REF 808.543 Liv Storytelling folklore sourcebook  by Norma J. Livo. An extensive collection of folklore trivia. The book is divided into four general collections of information: voice, story characters, story artifacts and activities.

• J REF 808.543 Pel   World of storytelling: a practical guide to the origins, development, and applications of storytelling  by Anne Pellowski. A scholarly treatment of the history formats and styles of storytelling. It also contains chapters on training and an extensive bibliography.

• YA 398.083 She Greasy grimy gopher guts: the subversive folklore of childhood   Josepha Sherman. An interesting collection of all those rhymes we made up and passed along as children, with background notes.

• J 975.6 Tor The importance of pot liquor by Jackie Torrence. Wonderful stories from one of America’s most celebrated storytellers. If you’re not sure about this book turn to page 126 and read about the shoebox.
