The Children's Department schedules many programs for children during the year. Click on the above links or scroll down to see what the Children's Department has planned for this month. All events are free. Registration is required where noted.

All areas of the library are accessible to people with disabilities. The Vineland Public Library is located at 1058 E. Landis Ave.


General Information

The Children's Department at the Vineland Public Library keeps busy all year long. During the school year, we assist children and young adults, parents and teachers with their research and computer questions. In the summer, we provide programs to encourage learning when school is not in session. Throughout the year, the Children's Department provides programs that encourage Family Literacy and a love of the library.

Class/Group Visits

Various teachers from area schools (public, private and homeschoolers) schedule class visits to our library. We can take no more than 30 students at a time. Call early! We get booked quickly at the beginning of the school year. There may be as much as a two month waiting period. Teachers may ask us to cover specific topics, but here is a general listing of the programs we offer:

Preschool/Day Care Centers – Stories, how to get a library card, how to find books in our Easy Reader section--45 minutes.
Kindergarten – Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find books in our Easy eader section--45 minutes to an hour.
1st & 2nd grade – Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find story books--1 hour.
3rd - 6th grade – Stories, book talk, how to find books in the library (an introduction to the Dewey Decimal System & our CLUES computers), how to choose a book for a report.  How to use the library for research. All programs are 1 hour.
Homeschoolers – We can modify any of the above programs for your group.

7th grade and above – Please call the Reference Department at 794-4244, ext. 4243.

All Ages

Vineland Library Teen Club hosts Pajama Family Night

Children ages 12 and younger and their families are invited to the Vineland Public Library for a Pajama Family Night on Thursday, April 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department.

Children are invited to wear their pajamas to the library and listen to bedtime stories, watch a short puppet show performed by the library’s Teen Club called “Grasshopper to the Rescue,” and make a puppet craft.

Registration is required for this free program, as space is limited.

Craft supplies are provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Families invited to Vineland Library for movie and a craft

Children and their parents are invited to a Family Movie and Craft Night Tuesday, April 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Event Room.

Po the panda is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five: Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey.

But Po's new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. Po must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed.

This film is rated PG.

Registration is required for this free program. Participants are invited to bring their own refreshments.

Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

This film is being shown in compliance with a license from Movie Licensing USA. The license and craft supplies are funded by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Vineland Library celebrates National Library Week with Read-A-Thon


Children ages 10 and younger are invited to the Vineland Public Library for a Read-A-Thon celebrating National Library Week.

The Read-A-Thon will be held Saturday, April 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Children’s Department. Enjoy an extended story time for children ages 10 and younger (come and go as you please), as well as random prize drawings – you must be present to win! Each child who attends a story session will receive at least one free book. Funding for the prizes and book giveaways is provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

The library’s Teen Club will be assisting with this event. Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

National Library Week is the American Library Association’s national holiday—a special time to celebrate the contributions of all types of libraries and librarians. The 2012 event will be observed April 8-14 with the theme “You Belong @ your library™.” Come see what your library has to offer during National Library Week!

Babies

Vineland Public Library provides Story Time for babies

Babies ages 6-23 months and their parents or caregivers are invited to Baby Story Time, Fridays, April 13, 20 and 27 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the Children's Department.

Babies will enjoy simple stories, nursery rhymes and songs, and will have one-on-one reading time with their parent or caregiver during the story time.

Age 2

Toddlers learn to love books at Story Time Program

Two-year-old children and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Vineland Public Library for Toddler Time Tuesdays, April 10, 17 and 24 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the Children's Department.

The story time features books, songs, fingerplays and other activities to get toddlers excited about reading.

Registration is requested for this free program.

Ages 3 to 5

Preschoolers listen to stories, make crafts at Vineland Library story time

Children ages 3 to 5 and their parents or caregivers are invited to Preschool Story Time at the Vineland Public Library.

Join library staff for stories and crafts on Wednesdays, April 11, 18 and 25 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. in the Children’s Department.

Registration is required for this free program, as space is limited. Craft supplies are provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Ages 6 to 8

Children ages 6 to 8 discuss Ant and Grasshopper at the Vineland Library

Children ages 6 to 8 can participate in a discussion of Ant and Grasshopper by Luli Gray on Wednesday, April 18, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

All summer long, Ant carries out the very serious business of gathering food for the winter, while carefree Grasshopper sings the days away. But Grasshopper ends up in trouble when a dreadful winter storm arrives.

Registration is required for the book discussion, as space is limited. Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register in person. Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book.

Funding for the giveaway books is provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Ages 7 to 16

Vineland Library hosts Pokémon Club

Children and teens ages 7 and up are invited to participate in a Pokémon Club at the Vineland Public Library on Saturday, April 28 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Community Event Room.

Join Library Assistant Juni Ruiz for a discussion of all things Pokémon. Participants are invited to bring their Nintendo DS handhelds, Pokémon games, trading cards, and anything else related to Pokémon.

Registration is required for this free program.

Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Ages 9 and up

Children ages 9 & up discuss book at the Vineland Library

Children ages 9 and up are invited to participate in a discussion of The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger, on Wednesday, April 25, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

Dwight talks to his classmates via an origami finger puppet of Yoda. If that weren't strange enough, the puppet is uncannily wise. Origami Yoda predicts the date of a pop quiz, guesses who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and saves a classmate from popularity-crushing embarrassment with some well-timed advice. Dwight's classmate Tommy wonders how Yoda can be so smart when Dwight himself is so clueless.

Registration is required for the book discussion. Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register in person. Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book.

Funding for the giveaway books is provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

If your child is not interested in the book or is unable to finish it before the night of the discussion, please return the book in good condition so that another child may join the discussion.
